Abstract

The agriculture sector occupies a significant position in the Indian economy as it provides livelihood and employment to more than 54 per cent of the population and contributes around 13.9 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (TERI Year Book 2015/16). The agriculture and allied sector continues to be pivotal to the sustainable growth and development of the Indian economy. Not only oes it meet the food and nutritional requirements of 1.3 billion Indians, it contributes significantly to production, employment and demand generation through various backward and forward linkages Moreover, the role of the agricultural sector in alleviating poverty and in ensuring the sustainable development of the economy is well established (State of Indian Agriculture 2015-16).
