Abstract

The UN has been a key forum for the Women’s advocacy. From the 1975 UN International year on Women through the Decade on Women (1973-1985) and the global conferences and summits of the 1990s. Women participated actively to shape economic, social and political development. The past three (1975-2005) decades have witnessed a steadily increasing awareness of the need to empower women through measures to increase social, economic and ethical equity and broader access to fundamental human rights in involvement in nutrition basic health and education along with awareness of the Subordinate status of women has come the concept of gender as an overarching socio-cultural variable.
