The Ideological Intertexuality of Nannool amoung Later Tamil Grammatical Texts
Abstract
This research explores the ideological impact of pavananti munivar’s nannul the most influential work in the later Tamil grammatical tradition after Tholkappiyam on subsequent grammatical treatises, through the lens of intertexuality. Later works such as ilakkana vilakkam, thonnulvilakkam, muthuveeriyam, were constructed by internalizing the ideological rules of nannul, adopting its verses verbatim, modifying certain aspects, and yet maintaining their unique identities. This paper argues that in the landscape of Tamil classical grammar, nannul is not a finality but a continuous movement that permeates later grammatical works as vocabulary, aphorisms(sutras) and core ideologies.
