Abstract

Ancient Tamil people organized their livelihood on the basis of the five landscapes, giving primary importance to the energies of the five elements. Sangam literature records that these people, who lived with the emotions of agam and puram and with ecological awareness, revered nature as divine. All aspects of life such as love, heroism, faith, play, charity, and worship are symbolically portrayed in the texts with nature’s active forces as their core. The Sangam poets, who sought to proclaim this worldview to the world, also portrayed the love emotions of the hero and heroine, as well as the valor and generosity of kings, as narratives inseparably linked with nature. Taking this perspective as its field of study, the present article is framed.
