The Challenges Faced by Vedda Women in Vakarai, Batticaloa: A Sociolinguistic Perspective
Abstract
This study examines the social, economic, cultural, and political problems faced by Vedda women living in the Vakarai area of the Batticaloa district in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, from a sociolinguistic perspective. The Veddas, an indigenous community of the country, are losing their traditional way of life and facing new social challenges in the post-war and economic globalization contexts. In particular, Vedda women face various challenges such as gender-based injustice, backwardness in education and health services, lack of employment opportunities, loss of cultural identity, and lack of political representation. This study explores their situation from social structural, cultural, economic, and gender perspectives. Finally, recommendations for improving the social status of Vedda women are also provided.
