Abstract

Sangam literature to later literary works, ethical concepts were primarily emphasized. Although love life was extensively discussed in Sangam literature, a virtuous life was stressed within that context.  The eighteen Kilkanakku texts that emerged after the Sangam period were entirely works of ethics. The Tirukkural beautifully explains what ‘aram’ (virtue/ethics) is, stating that ‘aram’ is that which never changes under any circumstances. The purpose of this article is to elucidate the nature and significance of ethics as emphasized in Purananuru, one of the Tamil literary works.
