Abstract

Ancient Tamil literature mentions land-based land discrimination. The ancient Tamil grammar book Tolkappiyam introduces four types of lands. Tolkappiyar introduces the Palai as the Naduvan Thinai and leaves without giving any land to it. Of the four lands, Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal Palai, Kurinji land and Mullai land have been cited as the Palai in the dry ecological literature due to lack of water in summer. This review article examines the structure of the Palai.
