Abstract
The palm tree, which flourished in the Tamil Nadu region from the Sangam period to the present day, is closely associated with Tamils life.In ancient times the palm was a symbol of victory, peace and prosperity.It is known from the literary works of the Sangam that one of the Muvendars, the Chera king, possessed Panampoo as his symbol.Pathaneer, fruit, Nungu, firewood, wood frame, etc., are available directly from the palm.The handicrafts articles, karuppatti,panagarganduwere produced from raw materials available through the palm. This article describes the special features of the palm tree.
