Abstract

Before listing the characteristics of folk deities, it is necessary to understand the religious context, cultural and historical backgrounds in which they exist. On that basis, in Tamil Nadu, folk cultural elements can be seen in classical religious deity worship, and classical characteristics can be observed in folk deity worship. Among Vaishnavite Acharyas, Ramanuja, who holds a special distinction, systematized Vaishnavite worship practices. He said that the Panchamas (the fifth caste/untouchables) also have a place in temple worship. It appears that Tamil Nadu Vaishnavism attempted to establish their religion among the common people by rejecting caste doctrine. Tamil Nadu Vaishnavism has adopted the traditions of the grassroots people as an alternative tradition to the Vedic tradition.
