Abstract

Malayalam is the Dravidian language that has the closest relationship with Tamil. In terms of sentence structure and the methods of explaining morphophonemic changes, these languages appear to be closely integrated with each other. Taking the gerund (vinai eccham), which is one of the Tamil grammatical components, this article attempts to explain: Does this exist in Malayalam? What terminology do Malayalam grammatical texts use for this - do they use Sanskrit-based technical terms or terms that are aligned with Tamil? At what level have these been used in the language and what tradition have they followed.
