Abstract

The tribal people living in the Western Ghats mountain regions of the southern parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala states are called Kanikkarar. They are found in the Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. They have various names such as Kani, Kaniyan, Kanikkar, Velanmar, Malaiyarasan, etc. Among the Kanikkarar, there are ritual songs called Satruppadalal (worship songs) and Thotrappadalal (songs of origin) that are associated with worship. Among these, the songs of origin narrate the histories of deities. Just as folk people celebrate festivals by singing praises of deities, the Kanikkarar worship and celebrate festivals through songs of origin.
