Ancient Cities of Tamil Nadu

Abstract
Ancient Tamil cities stand as remarkable evidence of the civilizational maturity of the Tamil people. Long before European cultures developed their celebrated cities, Tamils had already established thriving urban centres across the Tamil land. Cities like Uraiyur, Kaveripattinam, Arikamedu, Madurai, Korkai, Kanchipuram, Vanji, Musiri, and several others flourished during the Sangam period and beyond. These cities served as capitals of the Chola, Pandya, and Chera kingdoms, functioning as prominent trade hubs with active commercial ties to Rome, Greece, Arabia, Egypt, and Southeast Asia. Literary sources such as Purananuru, Akananuru, Silappathikaram, and Manimekalai, along with accounts from foreign travellers like Ptolemy, Pliny, and Periplus, richly document the grandeur of these cities. Archaeological excavations, particularly at Arikamedu, have further confirmed extensive Roman trade connections. These urban centres were not merely political capitals but also centres of art, commerce, religion, and culture. The article concludes that ancient Tamil cities epitomise urban civilisation at its finest, earning admiration even from foreign visitors of their era.
