Abstract

The tradition of love poetry called "Akamarabu" was established as a norm by Tolkappiyar and greatly celebrated in Sangam songs. This tradition is a literary convention that the Tamil people discovered from their way of life, as seen in Tolkappiyam itself. There is no better way than the akathurai (inner genres) to explain the state of sublime love. Devotees who had love for God also rejoiced in the flood of devotion, considering God and themselves as hero and heroine. Following the Sangam period tradition, the Alwars and Nayanmars also adopted akathurai songs
