Valluvar has pointed out leadership qualities in many places in Thirukkural. They are:

  1. The dignity befitting a leader, 2. Freedom from stage fright, 3. Enhancing knowledge, 4. The nature of understanding, 5. Self-restraint, 6. Avoiding anger, 7. Benefits arising from eloquence, 8. Body language, 9. Understanding the assembly/audience, 10. The ability to face defeat, 11. Eliminating laziness.
