Abstract

Auvaiyar is respected as one of the foremost women poets. There are prevailing opinions that several women poets named Auvaiyar may have lived, and that the Auvaiyars who lived in different periods eventually merged into one over time. Auvaiyar was a very famous woman poet during the Sangam period. Therefore, M. Arunachalam mentions six Auvaiyars, noting that many distinguished women poets in Tamil Nadu have been called Auvaiyar through generations
