Abstract

Sambandar cherished Tamil language and Saiva religion as his two eyes and protected and nurtured Tamil arts and Tamil cultural traditions. He was the one who created Tamil consciousness and love for the language among people, bringing about an awakening. The life of Gnanasambandar itself is filled with various innovations and wonders. He has sung songs in countless musical modes (paṇs) in Tamil music. Similarly, he has the distinction of introducing various innovations in literature as well, further polishing and refining the Tamil language. This glory belongs to this Aaludaiya Pillai (Lord's child - referring to Sambandar).
