Abstract

People who worship Murugan performed worship in a manner that would not diminish their heroic nature. Murugan is handsome, youthful, fragrant, and possesses divine qualities. Therefore, he also becomes one who causes love-sickness to young women. To dispel the enchantment of love that is softer than flowers, the velan (priest) would perform veriyattu on behalf of Murugan. The accounts about veriyattu convey that it is proper to worship heroically a deity filled with valor and victory.
