Abstract

This article examines the fifth case (ablative case) found in contemporary Tamil. Tolkappiyam (verses 77-78) and all subsequent works mention "inninai" as the fifth case marker. Tolkappiyam states that this case is formed in the meaning "from this nature of this object, this object." Tolkappiyar says that color, form, measure, taste, coolness, heat, fear, goodness, evil, smallness, greatness, hardness, softness, severity, old age, youth, praising, disparaging, newness, oldness, creation, absence, possession, smell, removal, plurality, smallness, attachment and detachment are the functions of this case
