Background of Land, Water, and Air Usage in Sangam Literature

Abstract

Sangam period people learned to live by giving primary importance to nature in their living environment. The aim of this article is to study the nature of pointing to these three elements - land, water, and air - as background for all events: land being pointed to as background for indicating the hero's country, for indicating the nature of the path when the hero departs for wealth, for the heroine's emotional disturbance, to indicate the heroine's diminishing beauty, to indicate the love event that the heroine cannot exist without the hero; water being pointed to as background for the king's army expansion; the south wind causing distress to the heroine separated from her hero, the event of the heroine speaking with the wind, the action of the western wind on the hero departing for wealth, and fishermen waiting and watching for favorable winds to sail their boats.
