Abstract

Ettuthogai and Patthuppattu are Sangam canonical texts. All these texts deal with akapporul (inner themes) and purapporul (outer themes). Akam + porul = akapporul. We call akam that which cannot be expressed outwardly - the mental emotions that occur between the hero and heroine. In these akam songs, they are seen as utterances of hero, heroine, good mother, nurse, friend, bard, and onlookers. Scholars refer to akam songs as songs of self-emotion.
