Abstract

Among Tamil literary traditions, Sangam literature stands out with unique distinction. Through Sangam literature, one can understand the condition and lifestyle of the Tamil society that lived two thousand years ago. The act of giving to others, whether as an offering or a gift, was highly valued during the Sangam period. Economic needs in life were minimal, so taking pleasure in giving away the possessions one had acquired was considered a mark of honor. The aim of this article is to explore that very nature of gifting.
