Concepts about Food in Sangam Literature
சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் உணவு பற்றிய கருத்தாக்கங்கள்
Abstract
Sangam literature represents the civilization and cultural foundation of the Tamils. Hosting guests, serving them, and caring for one another were important aspects of this culture. Sangam women were known to be generous hosts. 'The host grieves with a willing heart, The land of our dear Tamil tongue, free from hunger' – (Nattrinai) These lines reflect the women’s eagerness to host guests. Through the ancient Tamil customs of hospitality, we can understand their eating habits. Some concepts related to these are discussed here."
