Abstract
The clan people called Tholkudi evolved into a landholding society over time. In this landholding society, the king was given the foremost position. The king led with the responsibility of protecting five groups of people. ‘Ko’ means king. In ancient times, the settled population system emerged in the Marudham landscape. With the establishment of permanent settlements, the king had additional responsibilities: protecting surrounding lands, safeguarding people from harm, and elevating his status in society through rituals and traditions, seeking help from priests. The ruling king controlled the world and honored the priests highly; this preference gave priests significant authority and led to their governance. Thus, with the king’s full support, priests gained power to rule and control affairs. This certainty of power is a cultural trait of the Aryans that changed Tamil culture, as seen through Sangam literary anthologies. This article advances that viewpoint
