Abstract

Society is fundamentally structured upon the relationship between men and women. However, throughout history, men have controlled women in various ways. From the earliest times, women—who were subjected to subordination—have expressed a spirit of resistance. Literature has faithfully recorded these expressions. In the Sangam age, poet Ollaiyammai (Oḷavaiyār) voiced her feminist ideas. Likewise, Perunkopendu condemned the cruelties of the kaimai disease, and Thaayankanniyaar protested the ritual violence inflicted upon widows. Thus, feminist thought existed even in Sangam literature.
