Abstract

Historical records reveal that the Kongu Vellalar women who lived in the Kongu region were highly respected and held in an elevated position within society. These documents also indicate that, although they excelled in administration and judicial responsibilities, certain social evils such as polygamy and udankattai yeruthal (self-sacrifice on the funeral pyre) prevailed among them.
