Abstract

"Let us live facing anything; today’s courage
Will drive away even the sorrows of tomorrow…" — with such value-oriented thoughts…

Among the Five Great Epics (Aimperumkappiyam), the first two — Silappathikaram and Manimekalai — are closely connected both in plot and in historical period. Manimekalai is a revolutionary epic, a guiding text that leads towards transformation, similar to Silappathikaram. However, the path of revolution emphasized in Silappathikaram differs from that of ManimekalaiSilappathikaram conveys political revolution, whereas Manimekalai highlights social revolution.
