Abstract

Neelakesi is a polemical work of the Tamil Jaina tradition. It was written as a counter-text to the Tamil Buddhist work Gundalakēsi. This text presents the debates and philosophical discussions of both the Buddhist and Jaina religions. Therefore, it is likely that Neelakesi was composed during a period of intense rivalry between the Jaina and Buddhist communities. Based on this context, this article examines the probable period of Neelakesi and discusses its significance.
