Abstract

The Makatpār Kāñchi is one of the notable divisions (thurai) of the Purananuru in Tamil Sangam literature. It is also known by the alternate names “Makal Maruthal” (refusal of the daughter) and “Makan Maruthal” (refusal of the son). The central theme of this poetic section revolves around a confrontation between two kings — the King of Vanchi (Chera) and the King of Kanchi (Pallava). The King of Vanchi requests the hand of the Kanchi King’s beautiful, ornamented daughter in marriage. Angered by this proposal, the King of Kanchi opposes and resists him. Thus, Makatpār Kāñchi portrays the intense royal emotions, pride, and the political dignity embedded within dynastic relationships, reflecting both cultural customs and the valorous spirit of Tamil kingship during the Sangam period.
