Abstract

The classical Tamil ethical texts, known as Kizhakkanakku (minor literary works), often present moral instructions (Aram), material values (Porul), and pleasures (Inbam) in concise metrical forms. Among these, ethical principles are typically conveyed in the Venpa meter, which is especially suited for moral instruction. The compact form of Venpa—one-foot (Oradi), two-foot (Iradi), or four-foot (Nanakadi)—ensures clarity and avoids ambiguity in the moral messages. Tamil scholars have emphasized that ethical instruction should be brief and precise. Lengthy compositions may lead to confusion, so these concise metrical structures have been consistently used across the tradition of Tamil moral texts. Eladi is one of the sixteen Kizhakkanakku works, composed during the post-Sangam period. The name Eladi is derived from a compound of six substances—Cardamom (Elam), Clove (Ilavangam), Small Cumin (Siru Navarpoo), Dry Ginger (Sukku), Pepper (Milagu), and Tiphili—which were traditionally used to make an aromatic mixture (Soornam). Similarly, each verse in Eladi contains six ethical precepts, which gives the text its name.
