Abstract

Sangam literature comprises the Ettuthokai and Pattuppāṭṭu. The Sangam period is considered to have spanned from the 2nd century BCE to the 2nd century CE. During this era, women adorned their hair in various styles, and the literature even records the different names and types of hairstyles. Just as modern women take pride in styling their hair, Sangam-age women decorated their hair, and these practices are documented in Sangam texts. This article aims to present evidence from the literature to illustrate how women in the Sangam period practiced hairstyling and hair ornamentation.
