Abstract

Jallikattu! But what exactly is it? How did this traditional sport unite the people of Tamil Nadu in collective action and lead them to success? What are the reasons cited for supporting Jallikattu? Is it cultural pride? A matter of rights? Protection of native cattle breeds? Livelihoods of farmers? Or foreign trade conspiracies? Similarly, what are the reasons behind the ban on Jallikattu? Is it animal cruelty? Superstition? Or are there other factors involved? This article provides a retrospective analysis of the socio-cultural, economic, and political dimensions surrounding the Jallikattu movement in Tamil Nadu. It seeks to examine both the motivations for preserving this tradition and the arguments for its prohibition, offering a nuanced understanding of this complex issue.
