Abstract

There is a persistent perception among Tamil scholars and enthusiasts that research in Tamil is lacking or neglected. Understanding the reasons for this is both necessary and timely. In college degree programs, Tamil students are often placed at the bottom of the priority list. Those who miss opportunities in other degree programs are redirected to Tamil so that their academic year is not wasted. Some of these students take advantage of this opportunity to maintain their position, but many approach Tamil studies with indifference, seeing it as merely a way to pass the time. Consequently, classrooms become battlegrounds rather than spaces of learning, and no matter how much effort is invested, the outcomes rarely yield substantial intellectual growth.
