Abstract

This article explores the ethical principles and codes of warfare reflected in Sangam literature. Ancient Tamil society upheld strong moral values even in times of war, emphasizing righteousness, honor, and discipline. The study highlights how kings and warriors followed specific norms such as protecting non-combatants, avoiding unjust attacks, and respecting enemies who surrendered. Sangam texts portray war not merely as violence but as a structured and morally regulated activity guided by social responsibility. The article also examines literary references that illustrate bravery, justice, and humane conduct during conflicts. Through these insights, the paper establishes that Sangam literature presents a sophisticated understanding of war ethics, contributing to both literary and cultural history.
