Abstract

Tolkappiyar mentions land and time as the primary elements in Poruliakknam (semantics). He has categorized land into four types. Ilango Adigal in Silapathikaram has formulated grammar for the Palai tinai by saying "Mullai and Kurinji changed according to order." Those who possessed wealth lived by plundering the riches of the wealthy and looting fertile lands, and were therefore called "vanmai maravar" (brave warriors). The Palai land is also called the "fertile land of valor." The goddess "Korravai" serves as their clan deity. Ilango Adigal has mentioned in the Vettuva Vari the manner of offering sacrifices to Korravai and worshipping her with reverence. Tolkappiyar also refers to Palai as "naduvunilai tinai" (the middle land theme).
