Abstract

Many Tamils who had an undying love for the Tamil language worked tirelessly, deeply, extensively, and meticulously for the development of the language. In this manner, more than a hundred scholars have dedicated their body, wealth, and soul - everything - and rendered invaluable service for the growth of the Tamil language. Among them, the Tamil service of Venkataswami Nattar is noteworthy. The sage Paranjyoti has composed under the name "Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam" the sixty-three divine plays that Lord Somasundara, the primordial deity who has his temple in the sacred city of Madurai, performed out of great compassion for the salvation of all living beings in the world. N.M. Venkataswami Nattar has written an excellent commentary for this work. This article is structured to explain the commentary excellence of N.M. Venkataswami Nattar through the chapter of Tadatagai Prattiyar's divine incarnation in Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
