Abstract

The book OppiyalNookku (“Comparative Perspective”) discusses the fields of comparative studies. Comparison is not about pointing out superiority or inferiority, but about highlighting the distinct characteristics found in works of the same genre. In his comparative studies, V. Sub. Ma. considers texts that share common principles. He regards the purpose of comparison as understanding both the differences among texts and the historical contexts that gave rise to those differences. His comparative analysis does not dwell on the greatness or shortcomings of works, but instead brings out their flavor, values, and guiding principles. From the timeless classics of Tamil such as Tolkappiyam and Tirukkural to Kannadasan’sThaippavai, V. Sub. Ma.’s comparative perspective finds its scope and meaning.
