Abstract
In this vast ocean-like world, the most powerful force is love. Such love shines as a priceless ornament. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Nothing else can equal the value of humility born of love.” Love evolves into affection, compassion, kindness, and ultimately into humanitarian concern. The highest form of humanism is what distinguishes human society from all other living beings. Researchers describe humanism variously as “the natural order of human life” and as “the principle of human welfare.” For society to live in harmony, humanism must be nurtured through moral reflection, the study of history and literature, and the enrichment gained from one’s own experiences. It is with the aim of conveying this spirit of humanitarian thought to the world that the Aimperumkappiyams (the five great Tamil epics) emerged. The purpose of this article is to examine and enumerate the humanitarian perspectives reflected particularly through the Irattaikappiyams (twin epics).
