Abstract

When we study the history of the three crowned kings of ancient Tamilakam—the Chera, Chola, and Pandya rulers—their histories appear to inspire a strong sense of heroism. The history of these dynasties can be understood through various sources such as literary works, inscriptions, and copper plates. Among the three great dynasties, the Pandyas are considered especially distinguished. This is because they not only ruled a large part of Tamilakam but also established the Tamil Sangam, thereby promoting the growth and development of the Tamil language. As a result, many literary works flourished. This article discusses the Pandyan kings and the ruler Nedunchezhiyan, as portrayed by Mangudi Maruthanar in the work Maduraikkanchi.
