Abstract

Due to frequent wars during the Sangam period, the number of men was lower than women. The marriage system of one man to one woman did not provide a way of life for many women. Therefore, men lived by marrying one woman publicly while also taking other women as rightful women under names like beloved courtesan, house courtesan, street courtesan, and pleasure woman. The reason why information about courtesans is found abundantly in Sangam literature can be understood. The sexual roles assigned to both men and women in cultural behaviors are very important.
