Abstract

The one who protected the country and the citizens living in the country came to be known as the protector (kavalan). The house where he lived was highly secure. Therefore, they called it a palace (aranmanai). Silappatikaram refers to the palace as 'kovil' (temple). The abode of God is also called kovil. Sangam period society revered the king as God. The king listened to the advice given by poets and priests and ruled righteously. This article attempts to examine and discuss what kind of political ethics were followed in the ancient literary work Pattupattu.
