Abstract

From the earliest times to the present, Tamil society has maintained its distinctive cultural identity, with Sangam literature standing out prominently. Sangam literature reflects the Tamil mind’s creativity and imagination, offering a rich exposition of human emotions and societal life with artistic beauty. Literature can be understood as “Ilakku Iyalm”, where Ilakku refers to principles or objectives, and Iyalm refers to expression. Thus, literature conveys the principles and values of human society. In this context, Sangam literature expresses various facets of Tamil cultural principles, including love, family, brotherhood, customs, art, civilization, and economy. This article specifically examines the contribution of the four types of women (Naalvagai Pendir) in Sangam literature and their significance within the social and cultural framework.
