Abstract

To understand the social, political, and economic life of ancient Tamil society, archaeological and inscriptional studies provide valuable guidance and form a foundation for reconstructing Tamil social history. The Sangam literary works, compiled around the 5th century CE, consist of both anthologies and collections of poems. During the period these texts were composed, Sanskrit, as well as related languages like Pali and Prakrit, began to influence Tamil vocabulary. Tholkappiyar, when discussing types of words, notes that iyal-sol (root words), thisai-sol (directional words), thiri-sol (compound words), and vatha-sol (borrowed words) in Tamil grammar incorporated these Sanskrit-derived elements.
