Abstract

Communication tools evolved from the sounds of nature and developed as instrumental means of information exchange. Higher genres of classical Tamil poetry and rhetorical literary devices were used to convey messages from one person to another. These communication methods began with drum beats and leaf and feather messengers. Over thousands of miles, these media evolved to encompass the entire world. Since their primary purpose was to share common events with the public, they were called mass communication tools. Media always has the power to transform society. Today, the internet is the predominantly used medium by society.

Tamil ranks third in the usage of internet media globally. The impact of Tamil literature is strongly seen in the messages exchanged through these media. Instant messaging apps (online communication apps) are widely used for quick information exchange. The messages conveyed through these apps show strong influences of Tamil literary traditions.
