Abstract

The Tamil language richly preserves folk traditions. These serve as tools to understand Tamil heritage and cultural uniqueness. The saying "The Kongu region is to live everywhere; if Kongu blooms, everywhere blooms" conveys that the prosperity and values of Kongu Nadu permeate throughout Tamil Nadu.

Kongu Nadu is an integral part of Tamil Nadu and is celebrated for its fertile land and rich cultural traditions. Folk arts, which are like pearls retrieved from the sea of rural life, have a significant place in this cultural fabric. This article aims to discuss the folk music and musical instruments featured in the rural arts of Coimbatore district.

Traditional musical instruments such as the Parai drum, Kombu horn, conch shells (Sangu), Kai Silambu (hand anklets), and Kokkari (horn instrument made from ox horns) continue to be used in folk performances. These instruments contribute to the vibrant rural musical culture of the region.

Today, folk music and instruments remain an essential part of cultural celebrations and ceremonies in Coimbatore and reflect the rich heritage of the Kongu people
