Modes of Expression of the Chiefs in Agananuru
அகநானூறு மாந்தர்களின் கூற்று முறைகள்
Abstract
Most of the Sangam poems revolve around characters such as the chief (Thalaivan), the chief’s wife (Thalaivi), the friend (Thozhi), and the rival lover (Parathai). Among these, the chief, the chief’s wife, and the friend hold significant roles. This article focuses on an in-depth study of the modes of expression related to these figures in the Maruthamtinai of Agananuru.
The poems often depict the chief’s devotion, love, worries, and actions concerning his wife and friend. Themes include separation, longing, emotional conflicts, and social duties. The chief is portrayed as a noble and valorous figure who navigates personal and communal responsibilities. Poets use rich natural imagery and metaphors to express the inner sentiments and social customs related to these central characters.
The expression modes utilized by Agananuru poets are elaborate and aim to vividly represent the emotions and societal norms of the time.
