Abstract

Those who have attained Puranam do not return to this earthly existence. Puranam means the divine state. It is the duty of humanity to understand and achieve this divine state as the purpose of life. Among the five essentials to be preserved and protected in life ("The five essentials are God, food, shelter, and so on"), knowing oneself is notably important.

Wisdom is self-knowledge. According to Thirumular, after knowing oneself, one’s goal is to worship oneself. Just as hunger is satisfied by food, spiritual hunger must be fulfilled through penance. The disease affects the soul, but the soul should not be destroyed; penance is the cure. The basis of penance is one-pointedness of mind. Since the mind arises from the soul, the mind's realization of itself as the soul is penance. Vallar refers to this as the ethic of compassion for all life (JeevakaarunyaOzhuvam).

Following the five senses carefully, without harming life but restraining desires, is virtue. Virtue brings prosperity and results from purifying the mind. The purifying of the mind occurs through practicing pranayama. Pranayama connects the life force with the fundamental reality. The realization of the ultimate reality is wisdom. This article aims to share insights about pranayama accordingly
