Abstract
People living in various lands lead different ways of life. The life of the Neythaltinai (coastal region) people is characterized by their interaction with the sea — playing with the waves, establishing a deep connection, and blending into it.
Literary works are not only collections of information but also reveal historical elements of the period in which they were created, along with the social history and culture of the community. Sangam literature, epics, and minor literary works possess this context. Among novelists, J. D. Crus stands out. His novel "AazhiSoozhUlagu" attempts to portray the contemporary society while articulating various new themes. This novel depicts the life struggles of the Parathar community along the sea and shore.
The novel narrates over half a century of history of a small fishing village through multiple narrators and three generations, revealing social decline and cultural changes. It realistically and modestly describes life in the Neythal region, portraying the values and social problems faced by the Parathar community.
"AazhiSoozhUlagu" is recognized as a significant Tamil literary work for its detailed depiction of the life, culture, and struggles of coastal fisherfolk and the transformations in their society caused by historical and economic changes.
