Abstract

References to festivals celebrated by Sangam-era Tamils are found in Sangam literature. Some of these festivals were related to religious rituals, while others were social in nature. During the festivals, bards and dancers would perform to entertain the people. Certain cities were praised as "VizhuvamempattaPazhaviralMoodur" — meaning well-developed cities renowned for their prosperity and cultural vibrancy.

The festivals of the Sangam age were closely intertwined with the everyday lives of the people. This article explains the festivals mentioned in Agananuru, one of the Sangam anthologies.
