Abstract

Agriculture was the primary occupation in the life of the ancient Tamils. The mugatha lalavai measuring tool used to measure the resulting grains of paddy is marakkaal. This instrument is one of the most ancient metrological tools of the Tamils. The purpose of this article is to explore and explain the development and singificance of Marakkaal in religious, ritualistic belief and practices in the society.
